The behavior of cats greatly depends on the cat’s personality. It’s true that there are certain aspects of cat behavior that are common to most cats and that there are cat behaviors that are present in male cats and not female cats, and vice versa. However, most cats’ behavior is determined by his environment (before and after adoption), his experience with people and other animals (again, before and after adoption), and his hereditary predisposition.

Dog and cat behavior is very different. Where most dogs need a lot of attention and must be walked and let outside to relieve themselves, most cats are more independent. Dogs tend to be biddable, and are easily trained to come, sit and stay. While cats can be trained to do certain things – it is possible to train a cat to use the toilet – they will rarely come when called, nor will they sit or stay when commanded to do so. In fact, unofficial analysis of cat behavior shows that some cats will deliberately not do what you tell them, though this is just conjecture. When studying behavior, a cat and dog could not be different in many ways.

This is not to say that cats are bad pets – far from it. Many people love cats because they are independent and do not need people around all the time. People who work outside the home and are gone more than eight hours everyday do not have time to let a pet outside every few hours; nor do they have time to constantly pay attention to a pet. Cat behavior and litter box training can assist pet owners who are not home often but want to have a pet. Another complaint people sometimes have about cats is that they are not as affectionate as dogs. This is not true of all cats; while some cats are very independent, others are lap cats.

Cat Behavior Problems And What They Mean

Cat behavior problems can be scratching, clawing, biting, or urinating on furniture or in corners. There are many reasons for house cat behavior problems. When looking at cat behavior – clawing screens, for example – this indicates a need for a scratching post; this is often a kitten behavior. When you are thinking of cat health, cat behavior can tell you a lot. Marking or urinating on furniture is a male cat behavior and can mean he has a urinary tract infection. Take him to a vet if this begins abruptly.
